What makes a protest effective? They&#8217;re a form of protest where the participants pretend to be dead to elicit a certain reaction. Oftentimes these protests must be ended by the police, as they typically disrupt the flow of traffic and are a hassle to navigate around. This especially serves to grab the attention of anyone passing by.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 624px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/blogs-magazine-monitor-30402637\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/624\/media\/images\/79623000\/jpg\/_79623492_die_in_barclays.jpg\" width=\"624\" height=\"351\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">&#8220;Protestors staged a &#8220;die-in&#8221; in New York when the UK royals were at a basketball game.&#8221; Click for source<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>When did die-ins become a trend, however? One professor from the University of Rhode Island,\u00a0Robert Widell, recalls die-ins happening as far back as the 1980s. They were popularized by their effectiveness at grabbing attention; it was a simple yet direct way to invoke the imagery of death without other vehicles like images or audio.
