At a conference full of\u00a0speakers, it’s appropriate to ask (in the words of\u00a0Terike Haapoja<\/a>), “Who is qualified to speak on behalf of someone or something?” I don’t have the perfect answer, but I came away with deep conviction that artists are translators<\/strong>. We help others understand what we\/others see, hear, and feel. As each presenter crossed\u00a0the stage, the gathered were invited\u00a0into\u00a0the story\u00a0of another community, perhaps a world away but near in spirit. I was blown away by the scale of advocacy, from speaking on\u00a0behalf of urban youth rewriting\u00a0their narratives\u00a0in Colombia, all the way\u00a0to appealing\u00a0for the rights of our\u00a0entire environment. One lyric by\u00a0JKE<\/a>\u00a0has particularly stuck with me:\u00a0“We live like strangers in a land that is ours.” In all its forms, the homelessness of displacement is incredibly isolating. And yet it was in our\u00a0communal discovery\u00a0of creative border-crossing and bridge-building that CTS\u00a0felt like\u00a0a\u00a0harbor\u00a0for\u00a0free and equitable speech.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
