{"id":2222,"date":"2016-03-01T00:40:47","date_gmt":"2016-03-01T05:40:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mjsymuleski.com\/artofthemooc\/?p=2222"},"modified":"2016-03-01T00:41:01","modified_gmt":"2016-03-01T05:41:01","slug":"the-mixing-of-art-and-corporations-artlifting","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mjsymuleski.com\/artofthemooc\/the-mixing-of-art-and-corporations-artlifting\/","title":{"rendered":"The Blending of Art and Corporations: ArtLifting"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">One of the questions posed in Module 3 is on the relationship between art and corporations &#8211; can corporations be art projects?<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">A recent NY Times article profiled the work of ArtLifting, a for-profit company that partners with homeless and disabled artists to exhibit and sell their work. \u00a0The start up was begun by brother and sister Spencer and Liz Powers after Liz began working with the nonprofit LIFT, who offer support and services to the homeless throughout the country, as a sophomore. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">According to ArtLifting\u2019s website, the company describes themselves as a \u201cbenefit corporation\u201d. \u00a0Artists earn 55% of the profit from their work, and the rest of the company\u2019s income comes from venture capitalists and angel investors, a model that aims to avoid \u201can endless series of grants and fund-raising to sustain the business.\u201d \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/mjsymuleski.com\/artofthemooc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/18ebiz-master675.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2223\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-2223 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/mjsymuleski.com\/artofthemooc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/18ebiz-master675-300x210.jpg\" alt=\"18ebiz-master675\" width=\"363\" height=\"254\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mjsymuleski.com\/artofthemooc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/18ebiz-master675-300x210.jpg 300w, https:\/\/mjsymuleski.com\/artofthemooc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/18ebiz-master675.jpg 675w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 363px) 100vw, 363px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In another shift towards the corporate, ArtLifting is particularly focused on selling the artworks to corporations for aesthetic and decorative purposes. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">ArtLifting is an example of the type of corporate partnership that could become a larger part of the art world in future years. \u00a0AftLifting suggests that corporations can, in fact, be art projects, in the most literal sense of the term as well as more figurative senses. \u00a0This type of partnership does call for careful examination of the role and definition of \u2018social justice\u2019 that is used by companies like ArtLifting. \u00a0While working with homeless and disabled artists may lead many to immediately describe the company as a form of social justice, it is important to consider that they are still taking 45% of the income from sales. \u00a0For the artists, is 55% really enough to make a substantial change in their quality of life? \u00a0This will perhaps only be evident over time as the company expands and the relationship between company and artists spans a longer range of time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s2\">To read the NY Times article:\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/02\/18\/business\/smallbusiness\/homeless-artists-gallery-artlifting.html?_r=0\"><span class=\"s3\">http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/02\/18\/business\/smallbusiness\/homeless-artists-gallery-artlifting.html?_r=0<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">To learn more about ArtLifiting:<a href=\"http:\/\/www.artlifting.com\/\"><span class=\"s4\">http:\/\/www.artlifting.com\/<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>One of the questions posed in Module 3 is on the relationship between art and corporations &#8211; can corporations be art projects?
