The term “fanzine” (generally shortened to “zines”) refers to self-publications that are made for self-expression rather than profit. \u00a0Zines are generally low budget, outside the mainstream, have a low print run, and are oriented at self-expression. \u00a0While the term “fanzine” was first used colloquially in the 1920s by sci-fi fans, zine subculture\u00a0blossomed in the 1970’s with the rise of the punk scene. In particular, Zines\u00a0played a pivotal role in the development of the\u00a0Riot Grrrl and Queercore movements in the 1980’s and 1990’s. Today, Zines are used and distributed among many groups and have particular holds in queer and feminist communities, including online communities.<\/p>\n
