{"id":1708,"date":"2016-02-14T21:51:58","date_gmt":"2016-02-15T02:51:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mjsymuleski.com\/artofthemooc\/?p=1708"},"modified":"2016-02-14T22:25:33","modified_gmt":"2016-02-15T03:25:33","slug":"van-goghs-bedroom-in-chicago","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mjsymuleski.com\/artofthemooc\/van-goghs-bedroom-in-chicago\/","title":{"rendered":"Van Gogh&#8217;s Bedroom in Chicago"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thisiscolossal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/van_gosh.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"1485\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In relation to the Feminist Art Program\u2019s Womanhouse project, I came across another interesting installation project launched this week by the Art Institute of Chicago as a part of their exhibition Van Gogh\u2019s Bedrooms, which will show all three versions of Van Gogh\u2019s portrait of his bedroom in Arles together for the first time in the United States, alongside approximately 30 other works. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In order to promote the show, which opened February 14th and runs until May 10th, the Art Institute collaborated with Airbnb to recreate Van Gogh\u2019s bedroom, which can be rented by guests in order to stay the night and experience Chicago\u2019s version of Van Gogh\u2019s Arles. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">I\u2019m not sure that this would be classed as socially engaged art, however it does question the centrality of the art object. \u00a0Van Gogh\u2019s painting is no longer a 2 dimensional canvas on a wall, but a room in which one can move, sleep and live. \u00a0It allows for social engagement within its bounds and in fact encourages it, since the room is meant for two guests. \u00a0It is an installation piece that is in commentary with its canvas counterparts, and the observer\u2019s perspective of each work in turn influences their perspective of the other. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">It is also interesting to consider the work from a pedagogical perspective &#8211;
