What is Fluxus?

In lecture 1 of 1.2, Pedro mentions something called “Fluxus” when discussing artist interest in communications technologies and social media platforms. However, no description is given and it isn’t mentioned again.

Fluxus was an art movement that took place in the 1960s and 70s. At the time, human culture was becoming increasingly strict and rigid in structure, generally lacking abstract creativity and flavor. It was considered the most radical art movement of the sixties, and included people from a wide variety of professions and backgrounds.

Individuals naturally coincided in artistic projection, publicly creating and performing their work. Many considered the goal to be to destroy the boundaries between art and “real life.”

There was strong influence by the work of John Cage, who’s main idea was to start projects without the idea of what it would be or a conceptual end. This resulted in many public and abstract pieces as shown below.

Overall, Fluxus was an eruption of art in a time of strict social structures, and yet another example of people coming together to break social constructs and express themsleves.
