Fake news. That phrase has been used far too often recently. Separate from the complaints of President Trump, satirist, or “fake”, news has become incredibly popular in mainstream media. The Onion, a website that posts daily satire articles on a wide variety of real world news, was one of the first and has become the leader in this field. Even though most consider these posts to be exclusively for humor, there true social power in this form of media. For example, after the recent school shooting in Florida the Onion took to the web, posting an article called ‘No Way To Prevent This,’ Says Only Nation Where This Regularly Happens. The article is funny, however at the same time blatantly exposes the flaws in the United States’s ability to prevent mass casualties. The satire does a fantastic job of providing an interesting yet impactful way to present information and instigate social change. So even though the Onion may have started out simply with the reputation of a humor website, the platform has grown to having tremendous social power in todays media flooded world.
