Tactical Frivolity

Tactical frivolity is a method of protest in which incorporates elements of “humour, whimsy and the carnivalesque.” This approach to resistance provides a means of broadcasting a message or voicing opposition in a playful manner that may be more approachable for the general public. Furthermore, when presented in direct conflict with authority figures, modes of tactical frivolity provide leverage for protesters. The visual of non-violent, silly celebrations countered with authority’s forced crowd control methods of “tear gas, water cannon and percussion grenades” presents the power actually wielded by protesters. Generic examples of tactical frivolity include glitter-bombing, inflatables, and the use of singing and dancing in protest.
