In the section 3 Warpwire videos on sound, there is a lot of emphasis on “playing with the rules of sound,” and deviating from what is normal/expected. This idea inspired me to look deeper into something that always spooked me as a child: reversed songs that seemingly had hidden messages. You can go on youtube and find hundreds of videos of songs reversed that seem to have hidden messages when the sound is manipulated to be reversed. For example, when the song “Stairway to Heaven” by Led Zeppelin is played backwards, it appears to say “oh here’s to my sweet satan, the one who’s little path would make me sad, whose power is satan,” with chilling accuracy. This sort of discovery goes to show how much information can actually be stored in sound, given the variable of time that is conducive to sound and music in general. If you reverse how to sound is played by manipulating the time aspect, you can get entirely different messages and completely new tones that you may never have thought to create in the first place.
