Paris is Burning

This documentary is about the 1980’s New York City drag subculture in society. In viewing this documentary you see the transformation in how the drag culture took the very words that were being used to describe the iconic figures in celebrity culture and deconstructed them to fit the icons of the subculture they produced. Race, gender, and age were transformed throughout this subculture and fame became a possibility for those who were subject to extreme discrimination and harsh rejection, even sometimes death in New York City’s mainstream society.
