Embodied Acknowledgement- Amaya’s Empathy

Kishan Munroe is a Bahamian artist-activist whose 2013 collaborative exhibit, Swan Song of the Flamingo, shed light on the 1980 sinking of the Royal Bahamas Defense Force’s (RBDF) vessell, the HMBS Flamingo. When the RBDF detained Cuban poachers in Bahamian waters on May 10, 1980, Cuban fighter jets invaded Bahamian airspace and fired on the vessel sinking it and killing four Marines.

Amaya’s empathy is photographic installation and an interpretive dance performed by Cuban dancer, Amaya Rodriguez as a show of solidarity. Amaya is dancing to the morse code transmission that was sent out at the time of the attack.
