Experimental communities completely disrupt societal systems. They have the initiative to change the economy, the type of housing, the political structure, the educational system and even more aspects of a community by choosing to live apart from traditional society. One interesting example of this shown in the Mooc was Celebration, Florida, which is modeled after Disney values and ambiance. It is nearby Walt Disney World and has citizens, local shops, and utilities. As it still exists today, it is evidently successful. The Disney influenced city seems to have many aspects of typical communities and also serves as a tourist attraction, which is probably why it is still around today. Another example of an experimental city that is centered around artwork is Drop City in which the houses are beautifully constructed domes made from scrap metal. It seems to have a hippy vibe, which makes sense because it thrived during the 60’s and 70’s. It reminds me of plop art (without the negative connotation) as if the structures were plopped onto deserted land. These are just two examples of communes which emphasis very different components and missions.
