BlackLivesMatter

An activist movement in the United States that began in the wake of the July 2013 acquittal of George Zimmerman in the Florida shooting death of African-American teen Trayvon Martin. The movement started with the twitter hashtag #BlackLivesMatter and grew into a chapter-based national organization network working for the validity of Black life. Black Lives Matter activists have been critical in raising awareness about disproportional use of police violence against people of color and the high rates of civilian lives lost at the hands of security forces, particularly cis as well as trans Black men, women, and children. Besides campaigning against police brutality in the United States against African-Americans, the Black Lives Matter movement also aspires to (re)build Black liberation movement by centering those that have been previously marginalized within Black liberation movements, including Black queer and trans folks, disabled folks, black-undocumented folks, folks with records, women and all Black lives along the gender spectrum.
