Safe Spaces

The spaces in which art is created and displayed have a powerful impact on the meaning of the art itself. The Mooc discussed Mildrid’s Lane which serves as a home, museum, art program, and location for creative exchange. This is a unique place that allows for controversial or experimental art to be presented. This reminded me of our visit to the Carrack in Downtown Durham. The Carrack serves as a place for local artists to exhibit their work without any commission or experience in galleries. In addition to biweekly exhibitions, the Carrack offers performances, workshops, and any other creative activities. It was really interesting to view the artwork of emerging local artists who wouldn’t otherwise have the resources to showcase their pieces. It also offers opportunities for collaboration and demonstrations of artistic processes. Another interesting space we visited on our field trip was 21C, which serves as a hotel, museum, and restaurant. Artwork was displayed not only in the museum section, but throughout the entire space, which made the entire building an experience.
