The discussion in this week’s lecture on artist spaces led me to do further research on what diverse types of spaces were available in the world for people to work and create art in. This led me to an interesting discovery: a space for artists to not make artwork. Residency for Artists on Hiatus (RFAOH) is an online residency in which participants are invited to spend between 6 and 12 months not making art. The founders created this project to explore alternative contents for artistic activity and to question what they see as an increasingly institutionalized art world. Another aspect of this project was to find an art community to belong to, as many artists travel often and don’t feel as though they have a group of peers to connect with. Although this project occurs through the Internet, the people involved have made personal connections with each other. This was very interesting to me as the project created a space for artists through creating a community, rather than a physical space or institution.
